Part 1 Using Knowledge to Create Society and Economy for a New
Era
Chapter 2 In the Era of Mega-Competition for Knowledge
Section 2 Innovations and Japan's Economy
3. Innovations Required by Japan
(1) Knowledge-Intensive Product Innovations
If Japan is to maintain its competitiveness, it must maintain
and improve its advanced process innovation capacity, while creating an innovation
system that is capable of continuously generating creative product innovations.
It is hoped that by doing so, resource-poor Japan will make the most of its originality,
and launch high added value products onto the world market.
(2) Japan's Creativity - The Case of Video Game Machines -
In Japan's industry, which is generally regarded as lacking
creative products and services, examples of industries which have created a unique
market, together with digital electrical appliances, are the home video game
industry and the animation industry. In the past, Japan has been described as
hardware-oriented and lacking in software development capacity, but the country's
high content development capacity is proven in the worlds of home video game
software and animation. There are a large number of products apart from home
video game machines and digital electrical appliances in which Japan boasts a
large market share, and Japan must continue to generate such products and services
in the future.
