3 Cooperation through International Organizations
Japan is a member of UNESCO and as a governing member of its
intergovernmental committee related to environmental sciences and other committees,
participates in planning and implementing various intergovernmental joint research
programs. Japan is also playing a central role in cooperation with developing
countries, via such programs as the Project of Regional Cooperation in Basic
Sciences in Southeast Asia.
Another important contribution J apart is making is through
its cooperation with the United Nations University. The Government of Japan has
supported the United Nations University's Endowment Fund and the projects of
the University, in addition to providing the University with its headquarters
in Tokyo, in accordance with an agreement with the United Nations. The University
implements cooperative projects with Japanese universities and organizes international
symposiums in various academic fields.
