PART Recent Trends and Developments in Government Policies in Education, Science and Culture
Chapter 4 Promotion of Scientific Research
4 Organs for Scientific Research
Organs conducting scientific research in Japan include universities
(undergraduate departments and graduate schools), inter-university research institutes,
research institutes attached to universities, research centers attached to university
faculties, research institutes under the direct supervision of the Ministry of
Education, Science and Culture, and research institutes founded by non-profit
scientific research corporations. In recent years along with the sophistication
of research means, the necessity for joint research projects has been increasing
in many research fields. With this in view, the Ministry has been making efforts
to strengthen structures for scientific research, placing emphasis on the strengthening
of mechanisms for joint research.
There are a number of learned societies in various disciplines,
each of which is a voluntary body comprising researchers in a particular research
field from different research units of various institutions of higher education.
These learned societies have been playing an important role in the evaluation
of research activities, the exchange of information among researchers and the
exchange of researchers among different institutions.
