4 Higher Education
(5) Direction Taken by Graduates

Graduates of undergraduate courses totaled 313,000 persons in 1975, 2.6 times the 1960 level.

As regards the direction taken by graduates following graduation, the proportion of those going on to graduate schools remains the same at around the 5% level. The proportion of those finding employment had surpassed 80% till the second half of the 1960s, but turned downward thereafter, registering 74.3% in 1975. The proportion of those "finding no job and others" has been exhibiting an upward trend since 1970.

Graduates of junior colleges (regular courses) totaled 141,000 persons in 1975, 4.6 times the 1960 level. As regards their post-graduation direction, no major change has been shown in the proportion of those going on to higher-level schools during the last 15 years, which has stayed at around 4%. The proportion of those finding employment has been an upward trend since 1965, reaching about the same rate as registered by university graduates. The proportion of those "finding no job and others" has been on a gradual decline since 1970.

Technical college graduates totaled 8,300 persons in 1975. Of those graduates, the proportion of those finding employment exceeds 90% every year, while that of those going on to higher-level schools and that of those "finding no job and others" has been rising little by little since 1970.

The number of students finishing graduate school totaled 16,000 persons in 1975, 4.6 times the 1960 level. The proportion of those finding employment has been on steady rise.

Chart 1-39. Direction Taken by Graduates of Higher Educational Institutions

The number of graduate school-level degree grantees per 100,000 in several selected countries is compared in Table 1-8.

In terms of the total number of degree grantees per 100,000 population in 1970, Japan ranked the lowest at 13.4 persons, about one-tenth the U.S.A. level and about a half of the United Kingdom's level. During the last ten years, the number of degree grantees has been growing considerably in all these countries.
