3 Future Education in Japan
(4) Promotion of Science and Technical Education
Today science and technology play am increasingly important
role in socio-economic development. There is a growing need of a large number
of scientists, engineers and technicians in Japan as a result of recent technological
innovations, and also of highly qualified research workers for further development
of science and technology.
To meet such educational needs, it is necessary to evolve a
plan for the training of competent manpower in the fie1ds of science and technology,
and also to expand faculties for science and technology in higher education and
for the industry course of upper secondary schools. In addition, for the development
of both basic and applied studies of science, efforts should be made to improve
facilities and organization of graduate schools and research institutes with
increased allowances for research, and to provide advanced training for the production
of highly qualifies research workers. Besides, it is required to raise the general
and basic culture of all people to enable them to understand science and technology
and utilize it. For this purpose, improvement of science and technical education
in elementary and secondary schools, training and provision of necessary teachers
as well as improvement of facilities and teaching materials should be undertaken.
