According to the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) conducted by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) in 2000, Japanese children, when compared internationally, have a high ability to apply knowledge and skills to real-life situations (

On the other hand, some problems are pointed out. Specifically, (1) the percentage of students with the highest level of reading ability is about the OECD average; and (2) "time spent on homework and self-study" is less than that of any other country.
